what is Phonology?

Assalamu'alaikum Warohmatullahi Wabarokatuh....

in this Blog, I will discuss what is Phonology, functions, and rules in Phonology.

Let's check my Blog.....

What is Phonology ?

Phonology is the study of the sound systems of language.
Phonology is the aspects of language related to the distinctive features of the representation and reception of sound of language.
Phonology is the study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages.

Branches of Phonology

There are four branches :
  1. Segmental phonology : It analyses speech into discrete segments, such as phonemes.
  2. Supra-segmental phonology : It analyses those features which extend over more than one segment such as intonation, stress.
  3. Diachonic phonology : It studies the patterns of sound system through the history of language.
  4. Synchronic phonology : It studies the patterns of sound regardless of the process of historical change.

The function of phonology
  1. To find out the change in sound of a word.
  2. Learn about the process of sound formation, delivery/pronunciation.
  3. Studying the workings of human organs, especially those related to language use.

Phonology Rules
  1. Phonetic: Phonetic learns how sounds produced by human are called correctly. While phonology is a science based on phonetics and studying phonetic system.
  2. Said tool : The utterance is an organ in the human body that functions in pronunciation of language.
  3. Phonation process : Phonation or sound process in which the vocal cords in the troat produce sounds with or without sound.
  4. Language classification : Language classification is a method for compiling data systematically or according to some rules or rules that have been set in grouping languages.
  5. Vocal classification : Vocal classification is a method for compiling data systematically or according to some rules or rules that have been set in classifying vocals/voice.
  6. Syllable : Syllables are one or more phonemes that are marked by a peak of loudness of the phonem which is located in the vowel.
That's a little explanation about Phonology.Thank you for reading my Blog...
See youuu...

    2. So phonology is one way that teaches us how to say a word, right?? And in phonology we canlearn about pronunciation ??

      Delete
    3. yeah monica, you are right!!!. Based on the explanation from Abdul Chaer (2003: 102), based on etymology the term "phonology" is formed from the word "phon" which means "sound" while "logi" has the meaning as "science". So, in general can be said that phonology has the meaning of science that studies the sound of language that is generally used by humans. the study of the sounds of this language also includes the pronunciation that you asked about earlier

    1. Yes, I think so.
Like the example “-se” ending to “-ze”
      British: analyse, criticise, memorise, organise
      American: analyze, criticize, memorize, organize

    2. There are different in the word . But there are same meaning also or different meaning ? And how we pronounce between american accent and britsh accent ? Same or different pronuounce ?

      Delete
    3. Hi naila i will try to answer your question. based on the source that I got, the meaning remained the same, only in a different pronunciation. like for example the letter 'R'. In some words that contain the letter 'r', the British accent is discarded, or tends not to be called. For example, if in the American accent the word 'ARE' - 'AR', in the British accent the letter 'r' is omitted, so the word 'ARE' is only called 'A', another example: PARK - PAK, PART - PAT, (I only write differences in the tone of pressure on the existing word {PARK-PAT, from PAT is the spelling or tone that is heard because of the letter 'r' is issued, but for the actual PAT word also differs in the way of spelling or sound tone that is heard}), and there are still many another example.

    5. Hi Sarah I will addition answer your question. sound classification is one of the rules in phonology. Classification of language sounds is divided into two classes namely vowels and consonants. As for the example of the classification of language itself, in my opinion is the same as the example in vowels and consonants. language classification itself is more focused on the voice of a singer. You can visit this website https://makrus-bindo.blogspot.com/2012/10/jenis-artikulasi-dan-klasifikasi-bunyi.html

whereas here I only discuss phonology, that is, according to Kridalaksana quoted from the linguistic dictionary, phonology has a field meaning in linguistics that studies various language sounds based on their function.
